Itinerary

Day 1 – arrival in Berlin, Hotel, walk through the immediate surroundings
Explore the old Scheunenviertel and its vibrant life of art, theaters, cafes, restaurants and pubs, which make for a unique urban mix, and show on walkable scale what makes Berlin so exciting.

Day 2 – get an overview on a taylored tour through Berlin: we will stop at the famous Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz, Regierungsviertel (Government quarters) and  Friedrichsstadt. Sprinkled through this tour are cutting edge art installations and just finished architectural icons.

Day 3 – A tour of Berlins best known Collections of Antiquities: We pilgrimate to the Altar of Pergamon (which lent the Museum its name), the Ishtar Gate of Babylon and other magnificent samples of ancient cultures.

Day 4 – Established only a few years ago, some of the Galleries in the Eastern part of the city center are already global players in the art world. They find and define new currents in fine art through prolific selection and promotion of artistic talent as well as focussing on a very specific type and kind of contemporary visual art.

Day 5 – A tour 100 miles South to Leipzig, hometown of the New Leipzig School, a dominant and comercially exremely successful current in contemporary art. We will tour the inner city, the art museum and the Baumwollspinnerei (cotton mill district) with its studios and galleries.

Day 6 – Individual travel / rest. By now you’ve got an idea where you are and what you might want to explore further by yourself.

Day 7 – Daytrip to Dresden and surroundings: the saxon capital is an indispensable part of German art and history. We will walk the Altstadt (old town) among baroque Masterpieces like the Zwinger, Liebfrauenkirche and Schloss. This tour includes a visit of the Gemaeldegalerie Neue Meister (New Masters gallery) with a large collection of paintings by Gerhard Richter. A small detour in the afternoon to Meißen will give a glance into the old saxon wine region.

Day 8 – A tour to the Kulturforum, the center of art institutions in the City West. We will visit the recently built Gemäldegallerie with its unique collection from gothic to 20th century art, the Neue Nationalgalerie, a classic modern architecture icon by Mies van der Rohe and take a walk to nearby Nationalbibliothek and the brandnew city around Potsdamer Platz.

Day 9 - Like their counterparts in the East the galleries in the West of the city they are sought after at art fair circuits between Shanghai, New York and London. The day will include a visit to the Brücke Museum (German Expressionists) in Dahlem.

Day 10 – Kurt Tucholsky wrote in 1930: the best thing about Berlin is Potsdam. We will see why this is still the case. Even the building boom of the 90s left the Prussian Paradise intact. The tour includes Sanssouci Palace and Gardens and will finish in the inner city.

Day 11 – time to say Aufwiedersehen Berlin, or maybe stay a little longer on your own.
